Security Check

If you are offered a position with AUSTRAC, you will need to undergo a full security check.

You will probably be required to undertake a security check to either:

  • Protected Status or
  • Highly Protected Status

To achieve this clearance, you will need to complete a number of forms and possibly undergo a security interview. You will need to provide the following information:

PERSONAL DETAILS

You will need to provide:

A full birth certificate.
Extracts are not acceptable. If you have misplaced your birth certificate you can apply for one at the Office of Births, Deaths and Marriages in your birth state. The titles ‘Birth Certificate’ and ‘Birth Extract’ are often interchanged between countries and, indeed, states. The document required should bear the details of your parents as well as yourself.

All personal passports.
This includes current and expired passports. These passports are used to verify both your identity and the countries you have visited. These countries are of interest from a security point of view.

Evidence of the last five years of previous employment for protected status and ten years for highly protected status.
The documentation can include employer references, payment summaries/ group certificates, pay slips, bank records or personnel statements. If the five year period includes educational studies you can use a transcript, Higher School Certificate, trade certificate or university degree, as evidence.

Evidence of your residential addresses for the last five years for protected status and ten years for highly protected status.
Evidence can include leases, water/electricity/telephone bills, bank statements, mortgages, etc. You may use documents provided for previous employment from a particular address.

Proof of all educational qualifications
.
This includes school and any tertiary or other qualifications for highly protected status only.

REFEREES
You must nominate five referees who can comment on your character and personality. Referees should know you well. They must not be family members, de factos, partners or relatives. Do not nominate professional people (i.e. doctors, lecturers, professors, clergy, accountants, department heads etc) unless they know you well personally. Both partners in a relationship should not be nominated. Referees must be willing and able to be interviewed. The most valuable referees are friends whom you socialise with and previous/current supervisors. Please do not nominate supervisors only. The referees you nominate must have known you for five years collectively. For example, if one referee knew you from 1990 to 1991 and another from 1991 to 1993 and another from 1993 to 1994, their knowledge of you collectively would span five years.
